Imagine a version of the Vanguard, mentioned above, that’s just a little more faithful to the original. Imagine if its three eyes were massive, lovingly rendered orbs of mottled glass. Imagine if its teeth were so long as to be absurd, but rendered with precise detail down to the marrow.
Demon’s Souls resurrects a game that could have easily become a historical footnote overshadowed by its more popular successors. In the process, it also manages to get everyone excited about the potential of next-gen console gaming. It’s the best next-gen launch game and a damn good entry into the Soulslike genre. The PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls is, in the ways that matter most, the best version of the game, but that still leaves us with the question of why you should care about Demon’s Souls in the first place. You don’t walk away from a game like Demon’s Souls without a few good stories to share. When I think back on my time with the PS5 remake, two moments that occurred fairly early on in the game spring to mind.

Which, of course, is natural because they could not put the same old animations of the original game in this title. The infamously difficult Demon’s Souls is ripe for a sequel, and it’s something dedicated fans of the game may never lose hope for. The dark and mysterious kingdom of Boletaria immerses players in a bleak fantasy world plagued by demons and a creeping fog that is now a familiar sight across the entire genre.
If the graphical upgrades aren’t really that much of a game-changer for a particular gamer, then these people will feel little to no difference between the original and the remake. So, while the combat might look somewhat flashy, it’s still the same game with just more distracting animations. There’s not really any mechanical differences that would put the remake a peg over the original in any way. A great example of this would be the bare-knuckle parry, which punches the enemy several times in a truly visceral fashion. It goes without saying that Demon’s Souls has made the act of going through the game bare-handed viable simply because of this amazing animation. There’s no other game right now that truly encapsulates the next-gen feel other than Demon’s Souls right now, which looks more beautiful than anyone could’ve imagined in their wildest dreams.
That is to say, if those playing Demon’s Souls now for the first time have an easier experience, it won’t be by much. There are no “bonfires” near fog gates or checkpoints added, or anything of that nature. The Remake is actually closer to a Remaster than a Remake, and probably would be called one if the graphics were not completely overhauled. And while that should be mostly good news to Demon’s Souls veterans out there looking to pick this up and play with the noobies, there were some missed opportunities here that I will mention. The mechanics of Character Tendency and World Tendency, which are barely touched upon in Bloodborne, do not exist in other Souls games and cause each Archstone to change based on your current Tendency. Events happen, enemies move, new enemies appear, NPC quests spawn, and more depending on what actions you have taken in your game world.
Combat animations in the remake have been amped up to quite an extent — landing a backstab or a parry has never felt as satisfying as it does in Demon’s Souls. That being said, some people have criticized the Demon’s Souls remake for losing the art aesthetic of the original in favor of a look that is way more realistic and less atmospheric. Whatever one might say about Bluepoint’s remake, one thing that absolutely needs to be acknowledged is just how amazing the game really looks.
